This song has such a comfortable vibe to me. I love the shrill harmonies combined with mellow, dark-toned, yet messy, strongly plucked acoustic guitar. I love organic, minimalist instrumentation, especially by duos. The lyrics are also meaningful to me as a trans person, describing self-image difficulties.
THE DRUM MACHINE MAKES THE HAIRS INSIDE MY EAR GET UP AND CRAWL TOWARDS MY BRAIN TO ESCAPE THE SOUND. At this point, one half of the duo has come out as trans, but I cannot even hear if the lyrics are relatable to me because I AM IN TOO MUCH PAIN. I am so sad one of my favourite current artists changed their sensory friendly sound to an abrasive one, but such is the way of progress sometimes. At least they are still innovative and passionate for music.
With production in mind, I can easily assess that my disdain for the song I hate is based on production quality.
What little of the melody I can stand to hear sounds like a classic Girlpool melody I might love otherwise.
I hope one day they re-release their heavily produced music in acoustic duo format with NO drum machine.
I have a similar issue with another abrasively produced album by another favourite artist, Amanda Palmer.
Thankfully, she recognised that project as a deviation from her typical style and DID eventually release an acoustic
solo piano version (Piano is Evil), which I listen to regularly. The songs are great, I just cannot stand the
way she tuned her voice and how the chord changes sound cheesy coming from the plastic sounding, over-the-top
backing band on the original album version.
Let it be known, I do not only like acoustic sounding music or rough mixes.
I love K-Pop, which is as electronic and produced as it gets.
They're doing something VERY RIGHT with their mix and timbre, because I freaking obsess over it. Stan TXT.
